Giuseppe Cortese – Barbaresco Rabaja’ – 2018

One of the most important bottles of the production, which comes from one of the most renowned Cru in the Barbaresco area, famous for the power of its wines. In 4 hectares of property with 50-year-old vineyards on clay-limestone soils, with south/south-west exposures, Rabajà is only made when the vintages are at their peak. The grapes are harvested by hand and then fermented in old cement vats for 30 days, after which it is aged in oak barrels of varying sizes for 20/22 months where it rests in the bottle for a further 10 months. The result is a dry wine rich in character with heady aromas in continuous evolution from fruit to spices to more complex scents such as leather and tobacco, which is recognised for its structure and fresh drinking harmony surrounded by beautiful tannins.

Description

The intuition and the bet, would be the perfect title to describe the story of the Cortese family in the production of one of the most iconic wines in the world, Barbaresco. Since the company was founded in 1971, they have been located in the small village of Barbaresco, with three generations under their belt, thanks to Giuseppe Cortese, who started the business with family support. In one of the most suitable areas for Nebbiolo, they own 8 hectares distributed between the cru of Rabajà and Trifolera, where the former is considered one of the best ever for the elegance and quality it gives to its wines thanks to the excellent exposures. Walking between the rows of vines today, the pure tradition of the past reigns, made up of respect and ties to a territory where the vines are literally “listened to” from the beginning to the end of their cycle in order to allow the grapes to express themselves brilliantly. In fact, with vineyards more than 40 years old, no chemical products are used in order to obtain total purity, which together with manual work in the cellar and medium-long ageing give life to wines of great intensity and extreme elegance produced only in the best years. A real culture as the key to the creation of one of the greatest Italian wines in the world born in an unimaginable distant moment.
