Luigi Spertino – Barbera d’Asti Superiore Vigna La Mandorla Edizione la Grisa – 2014

Mandorla is the most historical vineyard cultivated by the Spertino family, it takes its name precisely from the plant of the mandarlo, once planted in this area thanks to a particularly warmer and privileged microclimate, absolutely unusual in this cold region of lower Piedmont. In addition, this vineyard enjoys a steep 45-degree slope with clay soils that are very hard to work with due to a strong presence of iron. Spertino produces almost all of its wines here, but it enjoys a certain prestige for the Barbera because of the quality of the grapes, and the distinct acidity that makes this wine warm in body, easy to drink and fresh. In 2014, on an extraordinary occasion, only 2,500 bottles of Barbera “La Mandorla Edizione La Grisa” were released on the market, dedicated precisely to the history of Barbera, known as ” Grisa” in the distant Middle Ages. One cannot define this wine as a normal Barbera, but one could compare it to an Amarone for its density and concentration. In fact, the grapes were harvested late and left to ripen in special rooms for at least 30 days. After all the alcoholic fermentation took place, the wine was aged in tonneaux for almost 2 years. A Barbera made from overripe grapes, with a remarkable alcohol content of 16 degrees, dense, but which thanks to its natural acidity manages to give elegance and not exaggeration.

Description

We are in the Asti area, specifically in the town of Mombercelli, where Luigi Spertino has been producing wines of unique and unmistakable essence since 1977. Today it is his son Mauro, a worthy heir, who married his father’s work ethic right from the start, carrying on ancient farming practices. Work in the vineyard is demanding, in the rows tractors do not enter and all operations are carried out manually, precisely for this reason production remains limited.
