Borgo Maragliano – Spumante Federico Galliano Brut Nature – 2017

One of the most sensational white grapes in the world is Riesling, a grape that prefers cold climates and is able to give great evolution through ageing for several years. We are in Loazzolo, at an altitude of around 540 metres with the vines facing south-east, where the steep hills together with the tufaceous soil and cold climate give great freshness. A classic vintage method with 100% Riesling Renano grapes, where after a careful selection they are vinified in steel at low temperature for several months, in order to preserve the aromatic framework. They are then bottled and aged on the lees for 24 months before disgorging. The result is a bubble with citrusy aromas turned to the typical carbide of the vine, where the ambitious combination of minerality and acidity gives a sensation of dryness and complexity very bursting.

Description

Borgo Maragliano is one of the most established and important companies on the Piedmontese sparkling wine scene. Its past is anything but simple, dating back to 1850, when the founder of the family, Giovanni Galliano, bought the first land he owned, believing all along in the richness that the land bestowed on the grapes. For five generations they have been located in Loazzolo, in the Langa Astigiana, bordering on the Langa of Alba, geologically characterised by tufaceous/limestone soils where the moderate altitudes, cold climates and wooded areas have allowed high altitude viticulture. This natural ecosystem has created ideal conditions for grape varieties such as Muscat but also for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, where the wide temperature range gives the grapes great aromaticity and acidity. A company with 41 hectares under vine, one of the first in the 1970s, together with figures such as Bruno Giacosa to specialise in the production of sparkling wines. But it was only thanks to Carlo Galliano, who, after graduating in oenology in Alba, began producing classic method bubbles. Focused on a maniacal philosophy of extreme care, in which tradition and selection combined with low yields and respect for the environment are the key to quality production. A cycle completed by careful work in the cellar, where different vinification techniques and bottle ageing in underground rooms dug out of the tuffs have made them an example to follow. What can I say, a family bet won with great stubbornness.
