Tenuta San Leonardo – San Leonardo Rosso – 2017

A symbolic synthesis of history and wine encapsulated in this incredible bottle, San Leonardo is undoubtedly an emblem for Bordeaux wines produced in Italy made so by the brilliant and pioneering oenological mind of Giacomo Tachis. First released on the market in 1982, it has always been the flagship of the winery, a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon 30% Carmenère and 10%Merlot with vineyards laid out at different altitudes on clay soils rich in stones and specific according to the variety planted so as to amplify its properties, in addition the plants reach an age of up to 70 years where the exposures are towards the south. Selected grapes and vinified separately in concrete tanks for several weeks with the help of indigenous yeasts, aging takes place in both new and used French barriques for 24 months before bottling for another 12 months. A wine famous for its innate longevity (more than 20 years!) that releases flavors and aromas well delineated over the years, from black cherry to underbrush when young to spicy and mentholated when aged, it presents itself on the palate with strength and velvety tannic texture, good final persistence with marked mineral touches to highlight its alpine provenance. Simply majestic!

Description

A winery that has become commendable over the decades but has been so for more than a thousand years, Tenuta San Leonardo is part of the winemaking spirit of Trentino as well as one of the pioneers of the advent of this region and Italy focused on the production of Bordeaux-style wines. Always residing in the Lagarina Valley in the province of Trento, their story officially began in the late 1800s when through a marriage the Guerrieri-Gonzaga family originally from Mantua was established introducing the entrepreneurial spirit with Anselmo Guerrieri. The real revelation came with his son Carlo Guerrieri who, after experiences between France and Tuscany, gave the turning point to his business with a wine production learning all the secrets of the trade from Mario Inciso della Rocchetta in a special relationship. It was only the beginning of glory as it was with the arrival of oenologist Giacomo Tachis in 1985 that absolute quality was established regarding the work in the vineyards and the use of small barrels giving a true identity to San Leonardo wines. Today the new generation is at the helm with Anselmo along with winemaker Carlo Ferrini, owner of Podere Giodo in Montalcino and a prestigious figure in Italian wine, who continue to expand and consolidate the brand in the world through a modern look but faithful to the old teachings. In 30 hectares planted with vines are cultivated with the classic pergola training system mainly red varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Carmenere with vineyards from 150 meters in different plots where the temperature ranges and the composition of the soils are suitable for their specific characteristics being in a unique area for high altitude viticulture. A centuries-old philosophical imprint that is to convey the concept of territory in the most defined way possible, since 2018 they are certified organic thanks to the ban of chemicals, quality control with thinning and selection, spontaneous vinification in cement tanks and aging in French barriques. A winery under the continuous Limelight managed and run by an authentic family of Warriors.
