Fattoria San Lorenzo – Il San Lorenzo Rosso – 2004

The boldest red of the entire production, made from an ancient clone of Syrah selected and replanted by Natalino’s father, created with the sole purpose of obtaining a wine derived from an allochthonous variety in the maximum territorial expression. Very old vines, low yields and selection of the best grapes that are vinified with the use of indigenous yeasts and then aged in large wood for 20 months, after which the wine rests in steel and cement for 120 months before resting in the bottle another 12 months. Only in vintages deemed compelling is the time extended to bring out the slightest peculiarities, but it already expresses opulent aromas of ripe fruit and spice, in the mouth it is intense and rich with good persistence without occluding a pleasant drinkability. To drink now or wait are two excellent choices!

Description

Around Italy we deal with authentic winemaking wonders, nor is the example Fattoria San Lorenzo, the winery you don’t expect. Located in the heart of the Marche region in Montecarotto, one of the Castelli di Jesi, one of the two most prestigious Verdicchio appellations and a compelling historical and cultural site. Since 1995 Natalino Crognaletti has taken the reins of the family business already active since the days of his grandfather Enrico who made wine and his father Gino who began selecting the best clones of each variety. Today he manages 24 hectares continuing the teachings handed down through generations, respect for the environment with use of organic materials in the vineyard where Verdicchio, Montepulciano, Lacrima di morro d’Alba and Syrah among the main ones are grown. Very rustic and territorial wines due to meticulous aging and little intervention with the help of oenologist Hartmann Donà, lots of maturation on yeasts for the whites, long extractions for the reds and use of cement along with old barrels for aging. Dynamism and personality create an exuberant fusion that characterizes this reality.
