Muller-Catoir – Riesling Burgergarten Im Breumel – 2016

When you want to get a wine with precise gustatory and olfactory details you have to raise the bar dramatically, in the world of Rieslings it depends a lot on the ripeness you want to achieve at harvest time. The types are multiple in crescendo each with specific sensory criteria, as far as this label is concerned we are in the Burgergarten district in a parcel considered a true Grand Cru because of its complexity where the grapes come from a particular section called “Im Breumel” with 30-year-old vines where the slate-rich soils are of rigid slope well facing southeast. Very low yields with careful manual selection between September and October, dry vinification with no residual sugar by performing spontaneous cold fermentations in steel tanks with a small part of the mass making it in wooden vats remaining many months before resting in the bottle. This is pure pursuit of perfection, minimal balance between notes of fruit and intensity of concentration with incredible elegance on the palate due to the excellent minerality, softness and final length. Prosit!

Description

There was a time when the concept of wine was to drink to get an overview and taste impression, now if you want to grasp it in its true essence and meaning, it is no longer enough just to taste it but you have to understand it. Muller Catoir wines are among the best in the world and reflect this vision. One of the oldest families in the winemaking world, they have always resided in Haardt in the Palatinate since as far back as the 1200s and have made Riesling their jewel. This wine region turns out to be in recent decades among the most curious to be discovered in Germany, it has typical landscape conditions with hills of rigid slope but warmer climates and nutrient-rich soils deriving straight and mineral wines where the vine has found exceptional dimensions thanks to natural protection from the cold of mountains and forests. The winery began its real production in 1744 managing about 25 hectares in the area’s most exalted vineyards distributed in the districts of Neustadt, Gimmeldingen and Mussbach cultivating only native varieties such as Riesling mainly, Muskateller, Pinot Blanc and Scheurebe with very old plants from which they derive wines of the highest level. Quality is innate in their philosophy, each step reflects old teachings handed down over time in perfect sequence, we are in the ninth generation with Francis David Catoir who is an active figure along with the family from the vineyard to the winery along with the expert figure of Martin Franzen. In the vineyard only incessant manual labor by means of certified organic treatments, thinning and seasonal harvests according to the type of wine desired between September and November, then in the cellar we continue with meticulous methods spontaneous vinification and aging in both steel tanks and wooden vats where the real key is rest with long periods before going into the bottle. Living legends for the myth and status they have managed to create toward themselves.
