Michele Satta – Piastraia Bolgheri Superiore – 2016 – MG

Michele Satta, farmer at 360 degrees, his story in the world of wine begins by chance in 1974, humble work to begin with but that are the basis of his great knowledge and his unconditional love for the land. In ’83 the first harvest and from that day a story that has grown step by step with the history of Bolgheri, the first vineyard is called Vigna al Cavaliere, Michele began with a friend from Friuli betting a lot on what we called “cubigiane”, that is the bag-in-box of 10 liters, at 1,800 lire per liter! Since then, things have definitely changed, many trips that broaden knowledge and comparisons, a few years of work as an agronomist for Ornellaia and finally in 1990 the production of the first pure Sangiovese produced in less than 4 barriques! In 1991 Michele planted the first vineyard with the awareness of wanting to produce a wine that could be faithful to the wake of Sassicaia and Ornellaia, but also to his personal vision and experience in the vineyard. Hence the need to place side by side to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot the grapes that he believed could express even better the Mediterranean terroir of Bolgheri: Sangiovese and Syrah. Today the winery owns 23 hectares (23 acres) between properties and leases and the labels produced are 8 in total.
Piastraia is an equal blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, syrah and sangiovese, born with the 1994 harvest. The name is an authentic Bolgheri toponym, it stands for “place of extraction of flat stones, the “piastre”. Grapes come from five vineyards: Campastrello, I Castagni, Torre, Vignanova and Poderini. Thanks to the maniacal care of the vineyard, to the hand harvesting of the best plots and to the average age of the plants of twenty years old, the wine obtained is surprising. A red wine with character, great personality, the taste is enveloping and complex with a long and persistent finish.
