Marco Ludovico – Primitivo Puglia – 2021

Within the Gravine Park are the best conditions for the production of Primitivo. We are located between the two main Apulian appellations of Gioia del Colle and Manduria, where sheltered hillsides with an altitude of over 300 meters and soils rich in clay and stones provide the perfect conditions for producing wines of good structure and complexity. In the contrada Caragnano east of Mottola with plants about 20 years old, Marco Ludovico produces his unique Primitivo label in just over 1,000 bottles, where the wine undergoes alcoholic fermentation with indigenous yeasts and a maceration of about 20 days, after which the mass is aged 85% in steel tanks and 15% in wooden tonneaux for about 14 months. Do not be fooled by the significant alcohol content of this wine, after all Primitivo is known to be a sugar-rich grape, but it will amaze you with a structure well delineated by acidity without being too powerful, indeed on the finish it is rather crisp, with scents of tobacco and jam. Beware that this wine is very dangerous from how good it really is.

Description

Marco Ludovico is a true craftsman, where with extreme love he manages about 2 hectares of vineyards in Mottola, in the Gravine Park in Puglia. His story is very simple, the son of farmers, he took his first steps in the world of wine in 2003 after the birth of Masseria Ludovico by his father Giuseppe, so much so that he graduated in viticulture and enology in Udine, where he had the opportunity to study and work in other wine areas around the World. Finally in 2017 the dream of a lifetime became concrete with the birth of his own winery and label starting from a very personal style, free from schemes or labels, but with the aim of enhancing each grape variety according to the soil without intervening either in the vineyard or in the cellar. We are not talking about a natural philosophy, but a simple winemaker who in addition to interpreting his wines according to the soil, follows the characteristics of the grape variety by playing with styles, creating very limited traditional and non-traditional labels. As for the wines produced, the choice is mainly related to native Apulian grape varieties, such as Primitivo, Verdeca, Minutolo, although we see in the selection two Italian blends such as Sangiovese and Trebbiano, where thanks to the altitude of more than 300 meters of the vineyards, the strong temperature range, the perennial wind and the soils rich in clays and stones we have the ideal conditions to produce structured wines but with a nice drinkability. Great niche wines.
