Gianfranco Fino – JO Salento Negroamaro – 2020

Part of the soul of Salento is Negroamaro, one of the region’s most widespread native red grape varieties with unique characteristics recognizable by the wines’ dark color and substantial body. Negroamaro “JO” is one of the peaks of the selection, considered the best expression of the area, the name derives from “Jonico” given the proximity of the Ionian Sea, the sapling plants are over 40 years old and reside on red clay and limestone soils. Carefully selected grapes transported on isothermal cells, vinification in contact with the skins in steel tanks for 3 weeks then followed by aging for 12 months in barriques (50% new) before resting in bottles another 12 months. Egregious Salento expression, all the essence enclosed in a goblet, hints of red fruit and leather stand out, on the palate it is ample with structure while maintaining softness and tannic texture with a beautiful final savoriness. Notable!

Description

When talking about Puglia the figure of Gianfranco Fino is considered one of the most relevant, one of the first pioneers in the world of wine to start that process of oenological renaissance that today is finding very solid foundations. This journey of his began in 2004 together with his wife Simona in search of the perfect place to lay new roots in their homeland, after careful consideration the area was identified near Sava near Manduria. A pivotal wine-growing area in the region, suited thanks to a Mediterranean microclimate influenced by the Ionian Sea in which varieties such as Primitivo and Negroamaro reign undisputed bred with the classic tree system. A small plot of 1.30 hectares was purchased that reflected their desire that is, an old vineyard with 50-year-old plants of Primitivo, in the fullness of tradition, with the sole purpose of producing great wines. Past values were not abandoned but maintained and elevated qualitatively by continuing the restoration of an entire area by saving old scattered vineyards through even natural cultivation for the soils without too much interventionism with only manual practices. The harvests are accurate in timing each year with meticulous selection of grapes, in the winery, on the other hand, we return to the present with avant-garde techniques in winemaking and aging carried out in oak barrels longer than 12 months to obtain wines with a marked territorial mark. As a good reader of scientific books, he wanted to create a sort of cycle in philosophical terms by seeking the perfect relationship between the components of yesterday and today, tradition and modernity, man and wine in which their union generates an indissoluble triad composed of time-body-inner pleasure.Gianfranco Fino turns out to all intents and purposes to be the new image of the “Craftsman of the Vineyards.”
