Louis Roederer – Champagne Cristal – 2014

Created in 1845 at the request of the Tsar of Russia “Alexander II,” it represents the most important bottle of the Roederer maison, produced especially for the emperor in crystal bottles. All today it figures the highest expression of Champagne in the Roederer house, produced only in the best vintages from Chardonnay ( at least a 40%) and Pinot Noir ( about 60%) grapes, aged at least 6 years in the cellar before disgorging. The secret of this wine beyond the careful selection of fully ripe grapes from the best grand cru vineyards is the perfect balance that manages to persist over the years. Cristal is absolutely a classy, harmonious, refined wine with a crisp and savory finish. To be savored even after 10 years.

Description

The Champagne Maison “Louis Roederer” certainly boasts the records for history and independent family management. The history of the winery began in 1833 in Reims when Louis Roederer inherited the winery from his uncle; he was quite far-sighted in purchasing the best Grands Crus vineyards going against the grain in an era where it was usual to buy only grapes. Not to be outdone was the attention given to the work in the vineyard, parceling out each micro plot with the aim of enhancing the terroir and the grape variety: from the first 15 hectares purchased in 1845 in the Grand Cru Verzenay commune, today the winery covers 240 hectares divided into 410 plots between the Montagne de Reims, the Vallée de la Marne, and the Côte des Blancs. The wide range of plots allows the Roederer Maison to produce Champagne from grand cru vineyards only in great vintages and manage the selection of the best grapes for the cuvées. But the grandeur of Roederer wines had already occurred since the late 1800s, the quality of the Champagnes was so high that they were considered luxury bubbles all over the world, even outside Europe. It is no coincidence that in 1876 at the request of the Czar of Russia “Alexander II” a special private reserve of Champagne was produced specially created in crystal bottles, hence the renowned Champagne Cristal was born, which is now famous all over the world.
Nowadays, leading the company we find the seventh generation headed by Frédéric Rouzaud where philosophy and quality perception have remained unchanged, aiming at high-end production where class and tradition are still the cornerstones of the Roederer brand. Aristocratic Champagnes!
