Lino Maga – Montebuono Provincia di Pavia Rosso – 2016

One of the two legendary labels produced, Montebuono represents authentic territorial authenticity, an artisanal, old-fashioned wine, all without predefined control. A blend produced from Croatina, Uva rara and Vespolina grapes with vineyards 25 years and older, tufaceous soils rich in sands that guarantee a good propensity for longevity. About 6000 bottles produced, spontaneous fermentation and maceration in small barrels then aging in large barrels for 7-8 months before a determined rest in the bottle. A wine reminiscent of the past, evolving sensations in the minutes from red fruit to spice, the palate is juicy and weighted with silky soft tannins. Try it to believe!

Description

Lino Maga, Italian myth and legend in the true sense of the word, he and his BarbaCarlo became the most iconic wine of the Oltrepò Pavese because of not only the quality but the whole history behind it. The winery is located in Broni near Pavia, founded back in 1886 it has always owned the same vineyards until today managed from a young age first by Lino, then also together with his son Giuseppe, before his death in 2022 at the age of 90. The family owns 8 hectares in which typical varieties such as Croatina, Barbera and Uva rara are grown, distributed in the two Cru BarbaCarlo and Montebuono from which the eponymous wines are produced and which have been the subject of legal dispute for many years regarding the exclusivity of the name, today belonging only to the Maga family.
An old guard mentality, a lot of work in the vineyards (some even centuries old), very little mechanization, spontaneous vinification without lines or controls just like in the past and use of very old oak/chestnut barrels to maintain the essence of the wine itself. It is not a question of structure or taste, but only the differences of each vintage from harvest to bottle, where it is the wine during its process that is the only one speaking. A story in which time has remained anchored in the past in its purest form.
