Jermann – Vintage Tunina – 2021

When talking about Friuli Venezia Giulia, one cannot fail to mention Vintage Tunina, a revolutionary wine in 1975 that became from the very first harvests the icon of a style in opposition to the past. From the first tastings it was immediately esteemed by critic Luigi Veronelli, who called it the “Mennea of Italian wines” because of its quick drinking agility. It was the first blend of international grapes, Chardonnay and Sauvignon, with more traditional Malvasia, Ribolla Gialla and Picolit grapes with the sole intention of representing the soul of this region in a glass. Fermentations are carried out separately in stainless steel tanks, aging, on the other hand, takes place partly in 60-80 hectoliter Austrian barrels for several months. Description

The Italy of white wine has found its Rebirth and affirmation in Friuli. A modern story with ancient origins, we are talking about a peasant frontier land divided between Austria and Italy that saw in one of its most beautiful chapters the birth of the Jermann winery. Since 1800 with its founder Anton Jermann began the production of local wines only using indigenous grapes with peculiar characteristics such as Ribolla Gialla and Istrian Malvasia, later international varieties such as Sauvignon and Chardonnay were introduced. The study of the territory allowed the quality to be elevated thanks to the subdivision of plots making the best use of exposures and especially the Ponca soils. In the 1970s, with Silvio’s entry into the company, a new style of making wine took shape, very different from the fashion of those years, that is, wines with long macerations and very rustic, the change of course was elegant whites with fine and deeply mineral scents, never seen before! The maniacally cultivated vineyards are divided between the hills of Collio and the plains in the Doc Isonzo, different soils and climates that allow the production of wines of great expressiveness, one of which was Vintage Tunina. The choice proved successful, giving Friuli a new identity, a reputation maintained over the years that earned it the appellation “Home of Italian white wines.” Today the surname Jermann is an oenological pillar, an unmistakable philosophy with use of cutting-edge technology in the cellar for vinification, moderate use of wood in aging according to the type and short stops in the bottle to achieve more immediacy in the wines. Forerunners and innovators of an unparalleled region.
