Gaja – Barolo Conteisa – 2019

Among the Piedmontese and world excellences we can undoubtedly include Barolo Conteisa, one of the many masterpieces of the Gaja winery and a superlative expression of the Nebbiolo grape. It is obtained from a vineyard inside the Cerequio hill called “Conteisa” which indicates the old historical dispute between the municipalities of Barolo and La Morra which contended for the possessions of this area, the plants are over 60 years old with low yields and the soils here are sandy and rich in blue marl for robust wines. Few units produced, thinning and selection of bunches vinified in steel tanks at controlled temperature, the refinement is carried out in barriques and barrels for at least 24 months then stopped in the bottle. Perhaps words would not be enough to describe it, a wine endowed with a wonderful and timeless aromatic and gustatory balance as only over the years will it reveal many of its secrets. A bouquet of remarkable finesse but impactful, red fruits and flowers, on the palate it is complex, harmonious with a tannic texture of beautiful persistence. Authentic Poetry!

Description

The Gaja family settled in Piedmont in the mid-seventeenth century, five generations have alternated since Giovanni Gaja founded the cellar in Barbaresco, with the entry into the company of his son Angelo and his wife Clotilde, the real production of quality wine begins. From 1937 his son Giovanni made Barbaresco his flagship wine gaining a leading position on the Italian market, he introduced the philosophy, which the company still carries forward, that is to bottle only the best vintages and increased the owned vineyards through the purchase of Costa Russi, Sorì Tildin, Sorì San Lorenzo and Darmagi sites, thus consolidating a further improvement in production. The real turning point for the company came with the entry into the company in 1961 of Angelo Gaja who, thanks to his foresight and his spirit of innovation, managed to affirm the knowledge of Barbaresco all over the world. In 1972 a trip to America was fundamental for his training, and back in his Barbaresco he decided to plant chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon, in an excellent position from nebbiolo, thus conquering the international markets. In 1994 the Gaja family bought the Pieve S. Restituita winery in Montalcino and in 1996 they bought a second property in Tuscany, in Bolgheri, where they founded the Ca’ Marcanda winery. The company’s philosophy is to contribute with its work to the beauty and environmental health, the care of the vineyards is obsessive and begins with the preservation of the oldest vines, massal selection carried out on the historic vineyards, such as the working of the land as well as the vinification is inspired by respect for nature and its times, by traditional wisdom and innovative research.
