Frank Cornelissen – Munjebel Terre Siciliane CS Chiusa Spagnolo – 2020

This is one of the most interesting labels of the selection, Chiusa Spagnolo was first produced in 2012 and then only in precise vintages so as to achieve greater depth than other versions from the volcano. North zone of Etna, we are in the contrada Zottorinoto at about 600 meters, this parcel is an authentic Grand Cru identified after careful observations. It is located in a natural amphitheater toward a valley on the slope, hidden from climatic inclement weather and surrounded by rocky lava flows in which there are sapling plants of Nerello Mascalese free-range dating back to 1925. A production of 3,000 bottles, fermentation on the skins with a pied-de-cuve of indigenous yeasts for 50 days then aging in fiberglass tanks from 1,200 to 2,500 liters for 18 months with subsequent bottle rest for another 18 months. Absolutely different from the classic Etna rosso, in its components it is very reminiscent of a Nebbiolo, the aromas are complex and dynamic from red fruit to spice and tobacco while on the palate it has good tannin, structure and persistence. A slow wine that will reveal itself over the years. Do not be in a hurry!

Description

“Accept and follow nature” is Frank Cornelissen’s winery philosophy. Of Belgian origin, after various winemaking experiences, he founded the winery in Sicily, on Mount Etna, in 2001. Right from the start, Cornelissen was struck by the fertile and extraordinary territory of the Etna volcano, seeking to produce wines of great expressive identity in an area that is, among other things, still little exploited and known. The key and fundamental concept of the winery is not to intervene invasively in the vineyard, thus avoiding the use of chemicals, plowing the land, but to follow nature. In addition, fruit trees and cereals are integrated into the vineyards, to avoid having a monoculture and help the ecosystem. The winery is located in Castiglione di Sicilia and manages 24 hectares of vineyards, woods and olive groves on the northern slope of Etna between 600 and 1,000 meters above sea level, an area most advantageous for the quality of Nerello Mascalese due to cooler temperatures. In addition to the respect and care for the land, to produce great and territorial wines the yields per plant are very low, between 300 and 600 grams of grapes. Even in the winery, only neutral containers are used for fermentations such as mastelli, or fiberglass for aging. The winery never uses wooden barrels! The style is really to enhance the volcanic soils of each individual district that give minerality and notes of sulfur, herbaceous, vegetal. Extraordinary Purist!
