Elio Altare – Barolo DOCG – 2019 – 1,5 L

Despite being only the winery’s entry-level Barolo, this label demonstrates the perfect synthesis of Elio Altare’s philosophy of wanting to find a meeting point between tradition and innovation with a ready-made wine of superlative quality in every detail. It is an assemblage of several scattered vineyards as in the past from La Morra, Barolo, Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga d’Alba mostly facing south from which only the best grapes are harvested. Fermentation and maceration on the skins take place in modern steel rotofermenters at a controlled temperature for 5 days with subsequent aging for 24 months in French oak barriques. A piece of history in the glass, splendid in its elegance but firm in the mouth for tannins, typical aromas of red fruit and spice with hints of licorice on the finish accompanying an agile drink in which softness, structure and depth are perceived. Bewitching!

Description

The drive for change has always been the motor toward new discoveries in history, the desire to seek new paths and alternative ways of doing things by sealing a break with past customs, in the world of Barolo occurred at the turn of the 1980s early 1990s. Elio Altare was an enterprising young langarolo native of Dogliani who, thanks to his grandfather Giuseppe, put down roots in La Morra where he moved with his family and began working the land. These were difficult times when the local economy was in crisis and many people abandoned the precarious peasant life moving to the cities, they were among the few who remained and devoted themselves fully to viticulture. Being a very charismatic figure the turning point for him was not long in coming, convinced of the enormous potential of the hitherto much undervalued wines of the Langa he decided it was necessary to change the traditional mentality. He made some enlightening trips to Burgundy in search of new stimuli in making wine returning home thunderstruck by countless ideas of what he should do, so he cut down all the old large barrels in the cellar with a chainsaw to insert the new French barriques. For such a (historic) gesture he was disinherited by his father! Elio was founder producer who started a real revolution by proposing a new way of producing Barolo, an ideological movement was born represented by a group of young people: the famous “Barolo Boys.” Producers who totally broke away from the traditional model: impeccable from a technical point of view, based on a driven search for fruit concentration, smoothness of tannins, short macerations and a consistent contribution of small barrel oak. The so-called modernist current had such great international success as to make them unmistakable, from those days today the Altare winery is among the most iconic for wine lovers with Elio together with his sons always at the helm. A very prestigious family reality that produces 70000 bottles per year with great passion for wine and love for their land from incredible vineyards such as Arborina, Cannubi, Brunate and Cerretta for Nebbiolo and Barbera reaching as far as Liguria with the Campogrande winery for white wines in the La Spezia area. Pure excellence that is expressed through elegant and balanced wines, simple and natural vineyard work without application of biodynamics or other similar philosophies following only the experience acquired and handed down for dozens of generations. Years pass, times change, but the desire to continue experimenting and making a mark is more alive than ever!
