Diego Conterno – Barolo Ginestra – 2018

One of the most significant crus of the Barolo area, Ginestra is one of the hills where the expression of Nebbiolo reaches extraordinary quality standards. Located in the commune of Monforte d’Alba, where the Barolo has more body and structure due to the clayey soils, here we are on the border with Serralunga, where there is a discrete presence of limestone and rock. Diego Conterno owns a few plots of land with 60 year old vineyards with an excellent south-eastern exposure. The grapes are harvested by hand and vinified in steel tanks in contact with the skins for 20/30 days, followed by ageing in 500L barrels for 24/30 months. The result is a true Piedmontese masterpiece, and the 2016 vintage, which has gone down in the annals as the vintage of the century, only adds to the prestige of this label. A Barolo with scents of ripe fruit, spice and earthy hints that is powerful and decisive on the palate, with good acidity surrounded by smooth and persistent tannins. A true hymn to magnificence.

Description

Diego Conterno, former founding partner of the prestigious Conterno-Fantino winery, decided to split up in 2003 and set up his own small company, young by birth but growing fast. When his son Stefano joined the business, a real revolution in the approach to viticulture was created, introducing more natural methods with the utmost respect for the environment, improving the quality of the vineyards and obtaining organic certification. The winery is located in Monforte d’Alba, in 7.5 hectares of vineyards where the typical Piedmontese varieties Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto are grown, following a philosophy of great tradition but rich in innovation. Absolute dedication has made him an illustrious interpreter of Barolo, where he owns plots in the Cru of Le Coste and Ginestra, famous for the qualitative expression of his wines thanks to the clayey soils in perfect hillside positions. An authentic Langa bond between the producer and the terroir with the sole purpose of being passed on to all those who approach this world. Truly an international giant.
