Antoniolo – Gattinara Riserva San Francesco – 2017

On the Antoniolo family’s estates there is “a vineyard that produces incomparable grapes” and it is the Cru of San Francesco, a prized vineyard of 4 hectares totally facing west where in the porphyritic soils of volcanic origin there are 40-year-old plants. They identified specific plots over the years to produce richer and more exemplary Gattinara, the production is about 4,000 bottles in Riserva only, all selected clusters spontaneously fermented in steel tanks while the aging is done in large barrels for 30 months resting then another 12 months in the bottle. One of the best Nebbiolos in northern Piedmont, as superb as it is good, red fruit on the nose with hints of spice and excellent mineral drinkability on the finish and well-defined tannins.

Description

In northern Piedmont when one mentions Antoniolo, one automatically speaks of Gattinara, a richly fragrant and mineral wine that has taken the leap in the wine scene for the past few decades, a DOCG considered among the most important in the region. A village that identifies an appellation in which Nebbiolo called “Spanna” here reigns supreme, the main grape that has been able to adapt to colder climates from Monte Rosa and granitic soils of volcanic origin. The winery was founded in 1948 with Mario Antoniolo, the first landmark ever, a family of winemakers who did not abandon their land even in the most complicated periods such as the phylloxera crisis and the economic abyss of the world wars, they established a new cycle by arranging and vinifying grapes from old vineyards. A dedication theirs handed down over the decades to the latest generation, from daughter Rossella to grandchildren Alberto and Lorella each of whom brought ideas and desire to make great wines slowly conquering markets. The property has 15 hectares almost all planted with Nebbiolo with some Vespolina and Bonarda distributed in some of the best areas for exposure where the plants range from 40 to 60 years of age. The continuous expression of the vineyard with its peculiarities is sought without being invasive but only respectful, in the processes in the cellar long fermentations with indigenous yeasts and aging in large barrels of more than 20 months before stops in the bottle. Those wonderful small producers who have become a bulwark for their homeland.
