Fortemasso – Barolo Castelletto – 2015
The desire was to produce a wine that would convey its provenance in the maxim of a grape of world-class quality, the first Barolo produced by the winery from a single plot around 400 meters in Monforte d’Alba. The hill of Castelletto is famous for giving wines with an elegant matrix and an intriguing evolution over the years, the soils are composed of sand and clay where in this case the plants are facilitated by a steep slope and southeast exposure where the radiation is constant and distributed over the course of the days in the year. The best bunches are harvested, which are vinified in steel tanks with submerged caps for a few weeks in order to have a proper extraction of the components, after malolactic fermentation the wine is aged both in barriques and in large barrels for 30 months followed by 10 months of rest in bottles. Another interesting label to discover, the floral traits such as violets and spices are very distinct but the harmonious and complex drinking in which there is a weighted tannic texture of long persistence is surprising.

Description
Enhancing the value of a territory in its expressions is always a nail in the coffin when it comes to starting a new stage in one’s wine journey; the Fortemasso winery has become so for the Gussalli Beretta family. The facility is located near Monforte d’Alba in the locality of Castelletto inside an old farmhouse purchased in 2013 by the famous Beretta family, a historic brand and manufacturer of weapons, which for decades now has decided to invest in the world of wine in some of Italy’s mosti important DOCGs such as Franciacorta, Chianti Classico, Colline Teramane and Barolo. By nature focused on making quality, they undertook this new Piedmontese challenge in the production of red wines enhancing what this territory has to offer through its local grapes such as Dolcetto, Barbera and especially Nebbiolo for a total of 8 hectares planted with vines where Barolo is the absolute protagonist of the selection. The work in the vineyards is carried out with the utmost respect for the surrounding environment and with a great deal of attention in the various steps from the selection of the grapes to the winery with the use of modern and eco-sustainable equipment, little interventionism and aging in French barriques and large oak barrels by tradition. Another small chapter in the history of Italian wine that gains notoriety with only the desire to make its mark.
