Fortemasso – Barolo Castelletto Riserva – 2016

Only when the vintages are incredible is the Riserva version of Castelletto produced where grapes from the upper part of the vineyard are used where ripening is slower but necessary to have wines with good structure and longevity. The process remains the same but quality control is increased, grapes that are fermented and macerated slowly with submerged cap for 45 days in steel tanks in order to obtain the primary characteristics of the grape variety, also performed the malolactic fermentation is carried out an aging of 24 months in barrique and 24 months of large barrel after which it rests in the bottle another 22 months. Very complex and elusive as a wine at first but as soon as it stabilizes it becomes mind-blowing, intense hints of red fruit and licorice blended with a decisive and powerful drinkability synthesis of an unparalleled vintage. Magnificent elegance!

Description

Enhancing the value of a territory in its expressions is always a nail in the coffin when it comes to starting a new stage in one’s wine journey; the Fortemasso winery has become so for the Gussalli Beretta family. The facility is located near Monforte d’Alba in the locality of Castelletto inside an old farmhouse purchased in 2013 by the famous Beretta family, a historic brand and manufacturer of weapons, which for decades now has decided to invest in the world of wine in some of Italy’s most important DOCGs such as Franciacorta, Chianti Classico, Colline Teramane and Barolo. By nature focused on making quality, they undertook this new Piedmontese challenge in the production of red wines enhancing what this territory has to offer through its local grapes such as Dolcetto, Barbera and especially Nebbiolo for a total of 8 hectares planted with vines where Barolo is the absolute protagonist of the selection. The work in the vineyards is carried out with the utmost respect for the surrounding environment and with a great deal of attention in the various steps from the selection of the grapes to the winery with the use of modern and eco-sustainable equipment, little interventionism and aging in French barriques and large oak barrels by tradition. Another small chapter in the history of Italian wine that gains notoriety with only the desire to make its mark.
