Troplong Mondot – 1er Grand Cru Classé Saint Émilion – 2008

Troplong Mondot’s Savoir-faire manifests itself throughout this bottle, an authentic French pearl in the expression of Bordeaux in a perfect synergy of its grapes that give a wine of forward-looking aging. A classic Bordeaux blend of 90% Merlot 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, plants with weighted yields with plantings dating back as far as 1947 where in the soils in addition to limestone there are layers of gravel and flint that combined with the microclimates for each plot give perfect but late ripening. 75% of the harvest is destined for the production of this wine, the grapes from each plot are vinified separately where most do so in steel tanks while the remainder in oak barrels, malolactic and aging on the other hand are done in classic barriques for 12-24 months. Expectations are very high after these specific procedures, a wine that is not drunk young to savor its secrets that will be revealed only after years of waiting, the scents are multiple from black fruit to cocoa, on the palate it is opulent in structure, complex and mineral enhancing the terroir from where it comes. Don’t miss the opportunity to taste it!

The 2008 vintage was climatically exceptional with perfect ripening of the clusters and bursting aromaticity all in a splendid harmonic synthesis.

Description

The history of Troplong Mondot is one of constant change, with the sole purpose of improvement to become one of the world’s best wineries in the production of Bordeaux with vigorous magnificence. It all began in 1745 when the de Seze family decided to build the still-present château at the center of their property in Saint-Emilion, a century later the estate was bought by Raymond Troplong who increased its size by acquiring new vineyard plots. In 1936, it was sold to the Vallette family, who over several generations consolidated the prestige of the domaine from time to time, especially since 1980 when Christine Vallette took the baton along with her husband Xavier Pariente in managing both the vineyards and the work in the cellar, placing modernity alongside tradition. A few years ago, in 2017, the winery was purchased by Aymeric de Gironde’s SCOR insurance group with whom greater steps in quality work have been achieved through new investments. The property has 33 hectares under vine of 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc, an area this one that boasts different altitudes (110 meters the maximum), exposures and 25 different stratifications in the soil to give the wines an uncommon peculiarity in which there is a high percentage of limestone and excellent drainage. With the advice of expert agronomists Claude and Lydia Bourguignon, certified Organic farming methods have been adopted such as the use of horses instead of machines to give less compactness to the soil, no chemicals are used, vines more than 30 years old immersed in a preserved ecosystem of woods and hedges where thanks to all this in 2016 the property was promoted to the rank of Premiere Grand Cru Classé. The production philosophy is of the most meticulous with late than normal harvests, manual and selective harvests with total destemming of the grapes, vinification in steel tanks of 85% of the harvest while the remaining 15% performed in 600-liter barrels, as for aging they use barrels (75% new and 25% used) for a period of 12 to 24 months. Striking wines for their gustatory richness to be waited for a minimum of 10 years to grasp the strength that symbolize the aspiration to absolute success.
