Rivella Serafino – Langhe Nebbiolo – 2020

Following the uprooting of the historical Dolcetto vineyard, now not very productive and replaced by young Nebbiolo vines, this label was produced for the first time in 2019. The vineyards are always located in the Cru of Montestefano from which its famous Barbaresco is made, in perfect southern exposure with soils rich in marl and limestone for very energetic wines. Few thousand bottles are produced, grapes are fermented and macerated in contact with skins in steel tanks for 20 days, the aging is done in oak casks for some months. A Nebbiolo that has nothing to envy where you can feel the skillful hand of the producer, red fruit aromas that do not hide a great balance between tannins and acidity that accompany the long and persistent finish. What a personality!

Description

Rivella Serafino is still one of the most microscopic wineries in the Langa, but also one of the most sought after. The small estate is located in Barbaresco, at the top of the hill and famous Cru of Montestefano in just 2 hectares that surround the entire property where only Nebbiolo is grown. Currently managed by Teobaldo Rivella, his is a real family of winemakers where his grandfather and father Serafino Rivella already sold wine in bulk while his uncle Pietro was Angelo Gaja’s enologist for 40 years. However, their activity started in 1967 when they began to produce for themselves recognizing the potential of the vineyards, from which they produced only few thousands of bottles distributed only in Barbaresco and Nebbiolo d’Alba. From a purely traditional mentality, they have always distinguished themselves for the organic treatment in the vineyards by omitting the use of chemicals since the beginning despite they are not officially certified. They have been handed down a real conservative philosophy in customs and methods made of thinning and selection in the vineyard with manual work in the winery in all the phases, from bottling to labeling, without the adoption of any technology. There would be many ways to define them for their real and genuine wines, where time remains the only factor they adapt to, without haste, and so will we.
