Rivella Serafino – Barbaresco Montestefano – 2018

The most important of the two types of wine produced, this vineyard was historically one of the first to be vinified as a single-vineyard wine since 1961, producing wines with a solid structure. Produced since the early years, Barbaresco Montestefano is a true icon for the estate where the grapes come from vineyards over 40 years old with excellent southern exposure resting on marly limestone soils. Harvested and processed by hand according to custom, the grapes ferment spontaneously on the skins for 4 weeks after which they are aged in large Slavonian oak casks for 24 months and spend a further 12 months in the bottle. With no more than 8000 produced, this wine is a synthesis of tradition and the essence of the Langa, with intense aromas of fruit and spices where in the mouth it is completed with austerity and refined touches given by well balanced tannins. A true old school wine!

Description

Rivella Serafino is still one of the most microscopic of the countless wineries in the Langa, but also one of the most sought-after. The small estate is located in Barbaresco, at the top of the hill and famous Cru of Montestefano in just 2 hectares that surround the entire property where only Nebbiolo is grown. Currently managed by Teobaldo Rivella, his is a true family of winemakers where his grandfather and father Serafino Rivella already sold wine in bulk while his uncle Pietro was Angelo Gaja’s oenologist for 40 years. However, their business began in 1967 when they began producing for themselves, recognising the potential of the vineyards, from which they only produced a few thousand bottles, distributed under the Barbaresco and Nebbiolo d’Alba labels. With a purely traditional mentality, they have always stood out for the organic treatment in the vineyards, omitting the use of chemicals from the very beginning despite not being officially certified. A truly conservative philosophy has been handed down to them in terms of customs and methods, consisting of thinning and selection in the vineyard with manual work in the cellar at all stages, from bottling to labelling, without the adoption of various technologies. There would be many ways to define them for their true and genuine wines, where time remains the only factor to which they adapt, without haste, and so will we.
