Piero Busso – Barbaresco San Stunet – 2021

The municipality of Treiso has always been an area for Barbaresco wines with an austere character, nuances derived from the partly calcareous soils and altitudes of around 400 meters, which favor greater complexity in the grapes. The San Stunet hill is located next to the village and takes its name from the church of Santo Stefanetto in the middle. The Busso family owns old vineyards on the highest slope, renowned for its south-east exposure and the quality of its ripening. Fermentation takes place with the help of the grapes’ natural yeasts in steel tanks, remaining on the skins for some time. Aging is traditional, in large barrels for 24 months. This wine has very distinctive characteristics, a broad and balanced aromatic profile that reveals considerable freshness. On the palate, there are rough tannins and a good dose of acidity. After two years, this bottle becomes fantastic!

Description

Among the countless stories of the Langa there is one that has always fascinated me because of its genuine tradition that has never changed for more than 70 years, it is the Piero Busso winery, Piedmontese by birth and in fact. Founded in 1948 in Neive on the Albesani hill by Guido Busso, a hard worker and intelligent farmer as he was already beginning to enhance the quality of Nebbiolo by locating the most suitable areas. The winery passed into the hands of his son Piero, who, following his father’s teachings, decided to produce a Barbaresco that would be a photocopy of the terroir; thus it was that the first vintage of Albesani was released in 1982. Over the years specific plots have been purchased so as to respect a small and family size, today in fact there are 10 hectares where the Gallina and San Stunet vineyards are also included for a limited production each year, not only Nebbiolo but also Barbera, Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc. A very natural style of approach with little intervention following a certified organic regime, no use of chemicals so as to preserve the link with the territory typical of the wines, very low yields and in the cellar they work traditional without too much use of technology with long macerations and the use of large barrels in the aging without ever filtering each wine so as to make them even more essential. Purely family-run even today where they pay homage to their past, a small producer who has now become one of the Greats for Barbaresco, this is Piero Busso!
