Philipponnat – Champagne Clos des Goisses – 2013

Philipponnat’s entire wine selection consists of a range of spectacular labels, however, the winery is famous for owning for nearly a century 5.5 hectares of one of the best and oldest pieces of vines in all of Champagne near Mareuil-sur-Ay: the Clos de Goisses. A true natural wonder, one of the few “Clos” remaining from as far back as the 1700s, a fully owned Grand Cru, its name comes from the word “Gois” to signify its difficult working. It is a vineyard with soils of pure chalk entirely fenced by a low wall exposed to the full South, which has a 45-degree slope enjoying a favorable microclimate never going into shade. Hand-picked with grapes at full maturity, composed of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vinified separately where they carry out part of the fermentation in wooden vats, malolactic fermentation is not carried out to give more freshness and territoriality to the wine, then rests on its lees for 10 years. Produced only in low-dose Millesimato in the great vintages, it still turns out to be among the best of its kind, intense spicy and fruity aromas can be perceived but in the mouth what makes it unique is the depth and persistence that this magnificent vineyard manages to give in the glass. This is the winery’s Champagne par excellence, unparalleled! The 2013 vintage composed of 85% Pinot Noir and 15% Chardonnay was truly spellbinding presenting a magnificent weather pattern between heat and humidity to achieve not only great quality in the grapes but a striking freshness and refinement in the wines given by the smoothness of the Pinot along with the acid vein of the Chardonnay.

Description

Glory is reserved for the few. People shaped by their own history destined only for great things, in Champagne we find the Philipponnat family present for at least 5 centuries in the territory, born in 1522 in Mareuil-sur-Ay right from the start it went into business where it produced and traded grapes for the court of the famous Louis XIV at Versailles. A family unit united by a single-minded desire to shine and touch the highest heights of prestige, for generations they have contributed to the history of wine in France through their bubbles that were already considered exceptional in the past. A pivotal point in their journey dates back to 1935 when the “Clos de Goisses” parcel was purchased, one of the appellation’s main vineyards, a synthesis of perfection, which has propelled their fame around the world to the present day where simplicity and excellence never fails. The maison is located at a crossroads as well as the meeting point of the three main areas of the region (Montagne de Reims, Marne Valley and Cote de Blancs) owning 20 hectares of vineyards all Premier and Grand Cru distributed between the communes of Ay, Mareuil-sur-Ay and Avenay enjoying privileged exposures with inside plants in some cases very old. The overall vision has remained unchanged with the same savoir-faire as their predecessors, care and preservation of the vineyards using natural treatments and zero mechanization so as not to stress the soils while in the winery they still use the wooden vat in vinifications, resting on the lees from three to more than ten years and above all the use of Vin de Reserve applied through the Solera method reintroducing in small proportions old blends of vintages stored in oak barrels. The dynasty continues in the figure of Charles Philipponnat with the sole objective of carrying on the family spirit in the creation of legendary Champagnes.
