Nicola Joly – Les Vieux Clos Savennieres – 2020

Les Vieux Clos comes from the initial part of the Joly family’s monopoly vineyard with plants of about 30 years old and soils rich in shale and quartz. The harvest was late and 10% of the grapes were affected by botrytis noble rot, however the wine was vinified dry. Yields in the vineyard were only 30 quintals per hectare. The wine was spontaneously fermented and aged for 8 months on its fine lees in tonneaux. A wine of great aromatic complexity, mineral but with great body. Another great bottle.

Description

Coulée de Serrant is the name of a vineyard planted by Cistercian monks around the year 1130 and since then cultivated uninterruptedly, since 1960 it has become a monopole of Joly family. We are talking about a very small sub-zone of just 7 hectares (12.5 acres) in the west side of Loire, with steep hills rich in clay and limestone, here the main grape has always been Chenin Blanc. On these lands biodynamics has been applied since the beginning of the eighties and thanks to the excellent results Nicolas Joly has become a real point of reference for all the people who decided to follow this kind of viticulture.
Vineyards are cultivated in part by hand and in part by horse, during harvesting they pass by many times in order to pick only ripe bunches and possibly attacked by botrytis.
Among the best French wines, the family produces the following wines divided in three lines: Coulée de Serrant, Vieux Clos and Clos de la Bergerie. Wines with a golden color, mineral, creamy but with the typical Chenin’s aroma of honey and candied fruits. Anything you want to taste from this winery is a lifetime experience. Chapeau.
