Description

Michele Chiarlo is one of the figures who contributed to the quality wine revolution in Piedmont. Coming from a family of winemakers in Monferrato, after finishing his studies at the Alba wine school in the 1950s he began his adventure as a winemaker in Calamandrana where the winery is still based today. He was a visionary and a dreamer, understanding from the start what were the best exposures and grapes to focus on, especially going against a period of misery and abandonment of the countryside. Over the years, the winery has invested in the purchase of new vineyards such as the historic La Court hill in the heart of Monferrato, from which the winery’s most renowned Barbera comes, in Gavi for the production of white wine, and finally two vineyards in the Barolo area such as the Cerequio cru ( from which the Palas Cerequio, a resort surrounded by vineyards ) and the famous Cannubi was born. Today the company manages 110 hectares of land, establishing itself on the market as a world reference in the production of Barbera, Gavi and Barolo. The style in the winery and in the vineyard has always been traditional, both for the use of wooden barrels also used in fermentation, but especially for the attention to work in the vineyard avoiding the use of chemicals, carrying out only manual work and aggressive thinning. In addition, the winery has always had at heart the protection of the territory, opening an open-air art park among the vineyards collaborating with international artists such as Ugo Nespolo, Giancarlo Ferraris. Wines of great territorial expression, which can give remarkable results over time thanks to their complexity.
