Mastrojanni – Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Schiena d’Asino – 2015

Sometimes it is very curious and unbelievable to imagine how some of the most memorable Italian wines that today dominate the world’s markets and are symbols “Made in Italy,” only a few decades ago were in the shadows in their own production areas, Brunello being among these examples. Mastrojanni’s vision was not only to increase the fame of a wine but to deduce the potential of an unspoiled area, absent of viticulture but with favorable soils where only hard work over time would yield one of the best Sangiovese in the denomination. In particular there is one sub-area that stands out from the rest, it is the Schiena d’Asino vineyard, a hectare of hillside at an elevation of 350 meters with exposures between southeast and southwest, protected behind by Mount Amiata, where the oldest plants of 40 years reside that thanks to their deep roots on galestro soils give the wines great personality.A few thousand bottles, only fully ripe grapes are harvested, spontaneous fermentation in cement tanks with indigenous yeasts followed by aging in 16- and 25-hectoliter Allier oak barrels for 36 months and an additional 12 months rest in the bottle. A commendable Brunello to say the least, refined and territorial reflecting the mind of its creator, hints of ripe fruit, spice and jam cohesive with a palate of fantastic gustatory power for its softness, structure and aristocratic tannicity, because that is how a Sangiovese should be interpreted. Choose the right occasion, don’t rush!

Description

The origin of the Tuscan masterpiece lies very much in the products of its land, if we talk about Mastrojanni’s wines we are certainly mentioning the winery that helped make the history of Brunello di Montalcino. In 1975, in Castelnuovo Abate, Roman lawyer Gabriele Mastrojanni bought the San Pio e Loreto estate in the Montalcino area at 400 meters above sea level, an area that had always been suited to the cultivation of vines but remained unexplored over the centuries. It was a far-sighted and tenacious choice since in those years there were very few wine producers in the area, in fact his dream was to make the best Brunello ever, in fact a few years later he succeeded fully, creating a masterpiece of fine and refined wines with great potential in the future. He had understood that it was the motherland of Sangiovese, even the best in the whole region thanks to the microclimate, exposure and the complexity of the soils of volcanic origin so he decided to plant in a virgin land the first rooted cuttings of the Sangiovese Grosso clone. Bet won in a short time, from the 90s the brand Mastrojanni entered history for the high level of quality in every aspect at the international level being then bought by the Illy group, still today also can count with the help of the two collaborators of always still point of reference in the company, the oenologist Maurizio Castelli and the administrator Andrea Marchetti who carry on the legacy of the lawyer. Very thin and poor soils that over the years have been revitalized where the plants have adapted very well, so the style in the vineyard is more than respectful to the environment with the absence of chemicals, thinning is practiced and the harvest is divided into several phases according to the maturity of the bunches while in the cellar remains the use of vitrified cement tanks for fermentations and the use of oak barrels for aging. A winery at the top of the world for Tuscany, an ending more surprising than what lawyer Mastrojanni had imagined.
