Massolino – Barolo Vigna Rionda Riserva – 2016

The great fortune of those who make Barolo is to work great vineyards. Massolino owns about 3 hectares in the Vigna Rionda cru in Serralunga considered the vineyard par excellence for tannic and long-lived wines due to the compact soils where the plant’s effort is greater, exalting the characteristics of Nebbiolo. Production always limited according to the vintage, 40-year-old vines in a southwesterly direction on limestone soils where there is careful selection of the bunches which are vinified in contact with the skins for 25-30 days in steel tanks, after malolactic fermentation the wine ages 42 months in large Slavonian barrels followed by 30 months in the bottle. Accomplice to the vintage, 2016 proved magnificent in terms of water and thermal balance giving phenolic maturation out of the norm and unnatural aging potential. A very complex wine, not to be drunk immediately, to be waited for several years to begin to savor its different nuances that will show themselves over time. Hints of red fruit mixed with spice that evolve over the minutes into notes of leather and licorice, the palate is powerful and deep, austere tannins and impressive structure with a finish of good freshness and bold persistence. A true standout in its genre!

Description

The history of the Massolino winery is strongly linked to the town of Serralunga d’Alba. Since 1896, thanks to Giovanni, a tenacious and enterprising man, wine has been produced, investing in native grape varieties such as Nebbiolo and in the purchase of vineyards with perfect southern exposures. Another important figure giving prestige to the Massolino family is his grandfather Giuseppe, who in 1934 helped found the Consortium (which still exists today) of Barolo, Barbaresco, Alba, Langhe and Dogliani. Thanks to him, the best vineyards in Serralunga were purchased, such as the mighty Vigna Rionda, Parafada and Margheria. Today the winery manages 36 hectares of vineyards, located mainly in Serralunga and Castiglione Falletto and in the Barbaresco area. A traditional philosophy follows the winery’s history, where timing and respect for the land are still the cornerstones of the winery. Classic, straightforward wines, pure expression of terroir, but above all wines with great structure to keep over time.
