Massolino – Barolo DOCG – 2018

Barolo Classico is the first Barolo produced by the Massolino winery, with the aim of representing the true essence of the limestone soils of Serralunga. It is made from several vineyards in the Serralunga area, vinified in the traditional style in large oak barrels for 3 years and a few months in the bottle. An austere, spicy Barolo with severe tannins, but also with notes of rose hips and nutmeg and great freshness and savoriness that make it easier to drink. A true entry-level Barolo.

N.B. In 2018 this was the only Barolo produced by the Massolino winery, all the best parcels such as Parafada, Margheria and Vigna Rionda were used for Barolo Classico winemaking, due to cooler weather and several hailstorms that greatly reduced the quality and quantity of certain parcels. Simply put, this wine contains the best vineyards that give more specific peculiarities such as tannins and finesse that are more important. If you think you’re drinking a simple entry-level Barolo, you will quickly re-create yourself by how much quality is in it.

Description

The history of the Massolino winery is strongly linked to the town of Serralunga d’Alba. Since 1896, thanks to Giovanni, a tenacious and enterprising man, wine has been produced, investing in native grape varieties such as Nebbiolo and in the purchase of vineyards with perfect southern exposures. Another important figure giving prestige to the Massolino family is his grandfather Giuseppe, who in 1934 helped found the Consortium (which still exists today) of Barolo, Barbaresco, Alba, Langhe and Dogliani. Thanks to him, the best vineyards in Serralunga were purchased, such as the mighty Vigna Rionda, Parafada and Margheria. Today the winery manages 36 hectares of vineyards, located mainly in Serralunga and Castiglione Falletto and in the Barbaresco area. A traditional philosophy follows the winery’s history, where timing and respect for the land are still the cornerstones of the winery. Classic, straightforward wines, pure expression of terroir, but above all wines with great structure to keep over time.
