Maffrei – Langhe Nebbiolo – 2025

One of the wines released in the inaugural 2023 vintage, this Nebbiolo comes from the Serradenari vineyard in La Morra, the highest-altitude vineyard in the Barolo appellation. It is a wine that highlights the bouquet and freshness of the grapes; annual production is just a few thousand bottles, yet it has become the winery’s signature wine. The grapes are vinified using semi-carbonic maceration in stainless steel tanks, and aging continues in the same tanks with a subsequent transfer to concrete tanks. The intense fruitiness brings out the Nebbiolo’s color, offering an excellent drinking experience thanks to its acidity and velvety tannins on the finish.

Description

For the past few years, a breath of fresh air has been sweeping through the Langhe—a wave of innovation and new ideas, with young producers putting themselves to the test and carving out their own niche among the greats with bottles of exceptional quality. The Maffrei winery was founded in La Morra in 2021 by brothers Andrea and Stefano Mascarello, two young men who grew up in the world of wine thanks to their family—the historic founders of the Michele Mascarello winery—but who were determined to forge their own independent path. Without forgetting their roots, they have established their identity as avant-garde winemakers, producing wines that reflect their terroir while adopting an approach that speaks an international language. As advocates of Nebbiolo, they inherited vineyards in La Morra, primarily in the Serradenari and Torriglione areas, where they also cultivate Dolcetto, Pelaverga, and Chardonnay, with annual production totaling around 10,000 bottles. They manage less than 4 hectares, tended with care, and in the cellar, winemaking follows traditional methods with excellent use of oak for aging. An artisanal approach and a tribute to this new brotherly venture by the Mascarello brothers—known as “Ma-Frei” in the Piedmontese dialect.
