Louis Remy – Clos de la Roche Grand Cru – 2006

The magnificence of certain bottles is alarming when one considers that they are derived from small plots surgically demarcated in boundaries with special terroirs within, Clos de la Roche gives birth to one of the best Pinot Noirs ever. Officially classified as a Grand Cru since 1936 by the AOC, it is located in the commune of Morey St. Denis already categorized and divided with the famous walls by the Circestine monks almost a thousand years ago as the merit of its grapes was evident because of the brown, complex and hard soils all facing east at an elevation between 267 and 311 meters. The winery has 0.40 hectares of vineyard with 40-year-old vines for a production of only 2,000 bottles, vinification of the grapes in contact with the skins for 30 days with the use of indigenous yeasts then aging in oak barrels (⅓ new) for 22 months, no filtration of the wine is performed. Elegance made bottle and authentic piece of rarity depending on the vintage, a wine so vast that you cannot taste it in its first years but only after the tenth where those iron, floral and tobacco notes are more evident, the sip is complex manifesting remarkable power and accentuated savory sensations. Memorable!

Description

A domaine that of Louis Remy steeped in history and family events that by fortunate circumstances proved decisive in continuing the production of great French wines. The winery is located in the heart of Morey St. Denis, already in business for more than 50 years at a centuries-old farmhouse that underwent a sudden and drastic change when owner and founder Louis Remy passed away in 1982, passing the baton to his wife Marie Therese. Continuing her husband’s work, she was joined by her daughter Chantal, a forward-thinking wine woman and enologist, with whom quality standards were raised, increasing fame and demand at foreign markets. After her mother passed away in 2008, the estate of just 4.5 hectares was divided among her 3 children where she inherited 1.5 hectares divided a portion only in the family’s Grand Crus (Clos de la Roche and Latricieres Chambertin) along with the vintage winery. Today she has expanded in size boasting a monopoly on the Clos de Rosiers vineyard (close to the property) and a few parcels in Chambolle Musigny where Pinot Noir is the key to splendid wines made from 40-year-old vines and terroirs among the most complex in the area. A limited quantity of bottles per year made in a very rigorous way, from the choice of grapes to separate vinification by Cru using the partially whole bunch and indigenous yeasts, aging in classic barriques for a minimum of 20 months resorting to new wood (30%) only for the Grand Cru. Wines of great charm that convey the great eternal prestige of Burgundy.
