Livio Felluga – Terre Alte Rosazzo – 2022

Terre Alte is an undisputed symbol in the Italian wine scene, but not only. A memorable bottle first produced in 1981 in the high lands of Rosazzo, it is the result of the harmonious blend of Friulano, Pinot Bianco and Sauvignon grapes, where, thanks to the marl-rich Eocene-derived soils, a wine of great structure and evolutionary potential is produced. The vinification process is initially carried out in steel tanks, followed by wooden barrels where the wine undergoes alcoholic and malolactic fermentation. The wine rests on its lees for a few months and then moves on to bottling. A pulpy white with considerable structure and matter, thanks to its savory and freshness it is capable of aging for a decade.

Description

If history is written by predestined men, Livio Felluga figures among them, defined by all as the father of Friulian viticulture and a pioneer of the Italian wine renaissance. A history his fragmented by numerous events, but which were able to shape a man who was courageous, visionary and daring when it came to putting himself on the line in the world of wine. Friuli, a land of borders, has always been an excellent region for the production of white wines thanks to the riches hidden among its hills including Rosazzo and Collio. It was here that Felluga settled, in a rural land all but abandoned due to the wars, eager to restore a lost identity to an area he had always believed in. Settling in Rosazzo, in the village of Cormons in Friuli, it was only following World War II that he founded his company and took up farming to resurrect the countryside. But it was through hard work along with the restoration of old vineyards and the planting of new ones of different varieties including Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Pinot grigio and Friulano that he wrote a new chapter. A classic style marked by an innovative and stubborn philosophy made up of continuous experimentation and attention to detail that allow the grapes to express themselves to the fullest. A quest for quality honed over the decades accompanied by a rigorous sustainability program thanks to the banning of chemicals replaced by organic elements, manual labor and protected wooded areas seen as cornerstones for the future. In the cellar, the use of steel and avant-garde materials such as earthenware and terracotta prevails, with long rests in the bottle to preserve the purity of aromas and freshness that mark this territory. Love and perseverance, these are the pillars at the base of a winemaking world now known as the home of Italy’s white wines.
