Le Piane – Boca – 2017

The Boca Doc is part of the various denominations present in Piedmont since 1969, a specific area of a few municipalities around the village of Boca in which Nebbiolo has found an atypical dimension for the production of wines with farsighted finesse. The bunches here are carefully selected from 30 and 50 year old plants located in two parcels at different altitudes between 400/470 meters called Traversagna and Le Piane with gravel-rich volcanic soils well exposed to the south while temperature ranges are the key to aroma of the grapes. A wine composed of 85% Nebbiolo and 15% Vespolina, a very difficult variety to cultivate due to its sensitivity but essential for the integrity of the wine itself, the fermentations with the help of indigenous yeasts are made both in open and in steel remaining on the skins for 30 days, malolactic and aging take place in large Slavonian barrels for 3-4 years with a subsequent rest in the bottle. This minimal and long process has made it possible to obtain a true elixir of freshness with notes of violet, nuances of licorice and undergrowth that herald elegance in the drink in which, however, power and complexity are felt where the minerality and tannins provide a good momentum on the finish. To be discovered over time for its longevity

Description

The randomness of some events are sometimes the reason for the beginning of new stories, or at least in this case the rebirth of a Piedmontese wine-growing area forgotten over the years but with centenary customs or the Boca area. Le Piane was the creator of this event. A cellar born in 1998 when the Swiss entrepreneur Christoph Kunzli together with his friend and oenologist Alexander Trolf decided to buy the old cellar of the local winemaker Antonio Cerri (one of the last) after listening to stories and visiting in previous years an area of which they remained captivated by sensing its potential. It is an uncontaminated landscape within a concave-shaped natural oasis at the foot of Mount Fenera in the province of Novara where there is a favorable condition for the cultivation of vines thanks to the altitudes and pre-Alpine climates of around 500 metres. Theirs is a project to recover ancient traditions which, despite the untimely death of Alexander, continued undaunted by starting the production of wines with unique nuances which soon gained international recognition as well. The real challenge was the restoration and enlargement of old vineyards (some 100 years old) with a very common terracing system in the northern areas of varieties widespread in the area such as Nebbiolo (Spanna), Croatina, Vespolina, Durasa or Slarina; the maintenance of the surrounding woods, organic products and the parcelling of the land by grape type were the final part of the work in order to preserve the balance of the ecosystem. The processes in the cellar are very artisanal with the use of very little technology, each step of the vinification is spontaneous and takes place in wooden vats without the addition of external yeasts with macerations that can last up to 60 days, in the refinements only large barrels are used for minimum periods of 24 months and no clarification or filtration is performed before bottling. A winemaking reality on the verge of extinction which, thanks to the incessant effort of its innovators, is now back in business, stimulating new winemakers to increase its newfound dignity.
