Lalù – Barolo del Comune di Monforte d’Alba – 2022
The Barolo from the Municipality of Monforte d’Alba was first produced in 2022, the first vintage produced by Lalù from a vineyard purchased that very year, though Lara and Luisa had already been tending it in 2018 and 2019. The parcel is located in the highest part of the municipality of Monforte, on its outskirts, at an altitude of over 500 meters, in a less fertile area characterized by soils of marine origin with a high sand content. This is a rather unusual terroir for Monforte, capable of imparting greater finesse to the Nebbiolo without depriving it of the structure typical of the region. Fermentation occurs spontaneously in a 25-hectoliter open vat, with very delicate management of the cap and maceration lasting between 30 and 50 days. The wine ages for 24 months in Austrian oak and completes its aging process with three months in concrete tanks. The hot, dry vintage yields a highly drinkable Barolo, with aromas of red cherry, flowers, black tea, and light smoky notes. On the palate, it is juicy and elegant, with tannins that are present yet gentle, and a character that is more approachable than the usual austerity of Monforte’s Barolos. A wine that is already enjoyable when young, yet possesses sufficient structure and freshness to evolve over time.

Description
Lara and Luisa are two true “wine lovers” who, after meeting in college, set out to fulfill a dream: to produce their very own wine. With no farming background but plenty of enthusiasm and boldness, they founded their winery, Lalù, in 2019 in Serralunga d’Alba, after gaining extensive experience both in the Langhe at various wineries and abroad in regions such as Burgundy, Argentina, and South Africa. The first Nebbiolo vines were planted in 2015 in La Morra and Monforte d’Alba, and today they own 3.5 hectares where they cultivate the land with great love and reverence, respecting nature’s rhythms within an organic framework that preserves the health of the vines. Their vision lies in interpreting each vintage by approaching every harvest as sensitively and carefully as possible, ensuring that the raw material remains unaltered during winemaking in the cellar. These two young women represent a new generation of female winemakers who have taken on the challenge of winemaking with determination, increasingly shattering this taboo. This achievement stems from a journey that runs counter to the path of the past—this time moving from the city to the countryside—following in the footsteps of those who came before, in search of the pure expression of Piedmontese winemaking.
