Haart – Riesling Goldtröpfchen Spätlese – 2011

In the Haart family’s stable of vineyards we find Goldtropfchen (Golden Drops), surely the best expression of Riesling in Piesport, a Grand Cru already mentioned and ranked in old documents on the merits of the wines produced. A hill with very steep slopes that allow only manual labor, the soil composition is of very clayey gray slate with layers of shale deep down that has good drainage where the plants dig little but produce after a few years grapes of fine quality. Produced in Spatlese version so the harvest is late at full maturity, partial vinification of the must with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled steel tanks and resting on the fine lees for 8 months before resting in the bottle a few years. Huge potential in terms of taste and decades of longevity, it reflects the winery’s vision with intense fruit notes on the palate is firm medium-bodied but not dry rather a bit sweet and mineral on the finish where the acidity holds a perfect balance. A superlative richness.

Description

If we mention the Mosel, we are immediately referring to perhaps the most striking white wine region in the world, a natural ecosystem formed by hills and soils that are home to so many varieties among which Riesling stands out. The magic lies in the large number of wineries with centuries-old histories behind them that have contributed to the growth of this area-the Reinhold Haart winery was founded in 1337 in Piesport, it is one of the oldest winemaking families in the world in one of the best areas for wine. Generations upon generations have followed but the mentality has remained unchanged, untouchable in manner and style, they have amassed an impressive vineyard heritage and today boast estates in some of the most renowned vineyards in the world totaling 8 hectares such as Goldtröpfchen and Ohligsberg. Thanks to tradition, great quality and a constant striving for perfection they are considered among the absolute best producers in the Mosel, in fact since 1992 they have been part of the VDP i.e. the most important quality appellation in Germany. The standards are above the norm, in the vineyards work is manic intervene as little as possible without the use of machinery because of the very steep slopes, harvests scheduled according to the desired sugar content in the grapes and the yields per hectare are very low so as to obtain very classic style wines that are fruity and sweet. The cellar dug into the hillside harmonizes in structure with the rest of the landscape and allows a cool temperature for spectacular storage, fermentations are carried out cold with natural yeasts, and resting in the bottle lasts for several years. A timeless family.
