Gaja – Langhe Darmagi – 2020
One can speak simply of sheer madness, I call it instead the madness of a genius, a visionary man who with audacity and knowledge decided to break the chains of tradition and write a new part of Piedmontese wine history. Angelo Gaja was the first to plant international red grapes in the Langa, a choice that caused a stir because he decided to replace Nebbiolo with Cabernet Sauvignon, a not accidental homage to this variety and a clear demonstration of how the soils of Barbaresco were suited to make a great new wine. A single vineyard planted in 1978 to give birth to Piedmont’s first Bordeaux blend, composed mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon with a small addition of Merlot and Cabernet Franc for a total of 2.8 hectares facing full south with an elevation of 280 meters. It is said that during the work his father Giovanni would exclaim in dialect every time he passed the expression “Darmagi!” (What a pity!) in disapproval, a word that became the official trademark of this red giant. The Gaja winery’s methodology is always the same, thinning and careful selection of the bunches with successive macerations and separate fermentations for each grape of about 3 weeks; after malolactic fermentation, aging continues for 24 months in small French oak barrels. Majestic. A radical change between past and future since it was first produced in 1982, a dark wine with a fierce personality slowly revealing itself over the years like its namesakes in Bordeaux, youthful austerity with crisp hints of spice and very dynamic and impactful floral notes perfectly connected to a palate of strength and structure composed of dense tannins and sumptuous softness that characterize an impeccable and unforgettable final taste. Despite arousing the most powerful criticism and a real popular excommunication at that time going against everything and everyone, Angelo Gaja thanks to his splendid intuition and predestined talent gave us one of the most memorable labels ever created, absolutely spectacular to drink on the best of occasions. Simply Thank You!

Description
The Gaja family settled in Piedmont in the mid-17th century, five generations have alternated since Giovanni Gaja founded the winery in Barbaresco, with the entry of his son Angelo and wife Clotilde into the company the real production of quality wine began. From 1937 his son Giovanni made Barbaresco his flagship wine, gaining a leading position on the Italian market, introduced the philosophy, which the winery still carries on today, that is to bottle only the best vintages and increased the estate’s vineyards through the purchase of the Costa Russi, Sorì Tildin, Sorì San Lorenzo and Darmagi sites, thus consolidating a further improvement in production. The real turning point for the winery came with the entry of Angelo Gaja in 1961, who, thanks to his foresight and spirit of innovation, succeeded in establishing knowledge of Barbaresco throughout the world. In 1972 a trip to America was crucial to his education, and back in his Barbaresco he decided to plant chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon, in an excellent nebbiolo location, thus conquering international markets. In 1994 the Gaja family purchased the Pieve S. Restituita winery in Montalcino, and in 1996 they bought a second property in Tuscany, in Bolgheri, where they founded the Ca’ Marcanda winery. The winery’s philosophy is to contribute its work to the beauty and health of the environment, the care of the vineyards is maniacal and begins with the preservation of the oldest vines, mass selection carried out on the historic vineyards, as the working of the land so too the winemaking is inspired by respect for nature and its times, traditional wisdom and innovative research.
