Gaja – Barolo Sperss – 2019

The Gaja family has always had a desire to produce the famous Barolo wine, and in 1988 the dream was realized with the purchase of 12 hectares of vineyards in the Marenca and Rivette subzones located in the commune of Serralunga d’Alba. From these two plots came “Barolo Sperss,” a Piedmontese dialect term given by Angelo Gaja referring to his father Giovanni’s desire to produce the king of Barolo wines. It was precisely in Serralunga that Giovanni had spent some vintages during his youth and sensed that some of the greatest austere Barolo could be produced in this area, thanks to the particularly calcareous soils. This is where the first Barolo label in the history of the Gaja family was officially born. The two vineyards are located concurrently with each other, forming a natural amphitheater, situated at 370 meters above sea level with vines over 55 years old. The wine has aged for almost about 30 months in both small and large barrels. Sublime Barolo, with great character without sinning in elegance, able to age for a very long time in the bottle.

Description

The Gaja family settled in Piedmont in the mid-seventeenth century, five generations have alternated since Giovanni Gaja founded the cellar in Barbaresco, with the entry into the company of his son Angelo and his wife Clotilde, the real production of quality wine begins. From 1937 his son Giovanni made Barbaresco his flagship wine gaining a leading position on the Italian market, he introduced the philosophy, which the company still carries forward, that is to bottle only the best vintages and increased the owned vineyards through the purchase of Costa Russi, Sorì Tildin, Sorì San Lorenzo and Darmagi sites, thus consolidating a further improvement in production. The real turning point for the company came with the entry into the company in 1961 of Angelo Gaja who, thanks to his foresight and his spirit of innovation, managed to affirm the knowledge of Barbaresco all over the world. In 1972 a trip to America was fundamental for his training, and back in his Barbaresco he decided to plant chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon, in an excellent position from nebbiolo, thus conquering the international markets. In 1994 the Gaja family bought the Pieve S. Restituita winery in Montalcino and in 1996 they bought a second property in Tuscany, in Bolgheri, where they founded the Ca’ Marcanda winery. The company’s philosophy is to contribute with its work to the beauty and environmental health, the care of the vineyards is obsessive and begins with the preservation of the oldest vines, massal selection carried out on the historic vineyards, such as the working of the land as well as the vinification is inspired by respect for nature and its times, by traditional wisdom and innovative research.
