G.D. Vajra – Langhe Freisa Kyè – 2015

Little known, Freisa is one of Piedmont’s indigenous grape varieties with a centuries-long history but no longer widely planted. Very sensitive to climatic changes, it has a medium-late growing cycle and is not easily manageable; today it is found mainly in the Monferrato and Albese areas. Vajra offers it in a new version from 40-year-old vineyards located on clay soil at Bricco delle viole in San Ponzio. “Kyè” (who it is) represents the new role given to this grape, which is fermented in steel tanks for 12/25 days where malolactic fermentation takes place spontaneously. In accordance with tradition, the wine is aged in Slavonian oak casks and barriques for 26 months before being bottled. Still appreciated by many connoisseurs for its fruity characteristics with touches of white pepper, it is an interesting wine with a discreet tannic texture and good solidity, also suitable for ageing. To be tried at least once.

Description

Now an internationally famous name, with a past of great tradition but now distinguished by its avant-garde style. The company was founded in 1972, when Aldo Vaira decided to stop selling grapes and start making wine with a mix of tradition and experimentation. Located in Vergne, it has 60 hectares, but they still like to define themselves as a family farm accompanied by a young and dynamic team. The vineyards are mainly located in three municipalities of the Barolo DOCG: Novello with the Ravera cru, Barolo with the Bricco delle Viole, Fossati and Coste di Rose crus and finally Serralunga d’Alba with Cerretta and Baudana. Respect for the land, without the use of chemicals, and the deep link to its origins have always accompanied the philosophy of the winery. Old-fashioned work in the vineyards to preserve their innate quality gives their wines common characteristics of elegance, complexity and delicacy and reflects the result of an image they have built up step by step over the years.
