Franco Conterno – Na Punta Spumante Extra Brut – 2018

We can say that the Barolo area is not famous for the production of bubbles, it boasts among the world records for the high quality of austere and long-lived red wines such as Nebbiolo, but the sparkling wine tradition does not belong to the Langa farmers. In fact, if we look back some 300 years, U.S. President Thomas Jefferson on a visit to Turin had already praised the sparkling Nebbiolo he tasted. For the recent history of the Nebbiolo Spumante project, we are talking about 2010, thanks to the studies of consultant winemaker Sergio Molino together with several wineries to exploit the tip of the bunch of the Nebbiolo grape, not very rich in sugar but with more minerality, perfect for the base of a sparkling wine. Obviously starting with bunches of tannin-rich noble grapes such as Nebbiolo, the result could only be more than amazing, with fine perlage and particularly aromatic and intriguing aromas. The Conterno family was among the first to produce Nebbiolo Spumante, the vines used are in the historic Bussia parcel where l tips of the same Nebbiolo grapes used later for the production of Barolo are used, obviously the harvest for this type of wine is brought forward to early September to ensure crispness and acidity to the final product. In this case, the winery produces less than 4,000 bottles, where the base wine carries out vinification in steel tanks, while aging takes place in wooden barrels for about 6 months and then rests on its lees for about 40 months before disgorging. An elegant, offbeat bubbly with great structure. Absolutely all meal long!
