Ferdinando Principiano – Barolo Ravera di Monforte – 2016

Ferdinando Principiano is a true winemaker! In love with his vineyards, his are genuine and unique wines. The winery is located in Monforte d ‘Alba, in the heart of the Barolo area, and since 1993 with all his passion he decided to take over the family business producing excellent wines, but above all Baroli. After experimenting with the use of barriques and a modernist technique, in the mid-2000s he completely changed style giving priority to the care of the vineyards without the use of herbicides, and even in the cellar the approach began to be traditional and classic: the barriques were replaced with large oak barrels, the pressing is even done with the feet and only indigenous yeasts are used.
As Ferdinando says, his philosophy is not to stress the plant but to accompany and treat it without being too interventionist. His are clean, pleasant wines with a great freshness thanks to his style that has now become recognizable and unique!
His interpretations of the Barolos are incredible, a style all his own, where fragrance and drinkability prevail, despite being great structured wines, coming from two fantastic crus: La Ravera di Monforte and Boscareto di Serralunga d’Alba.
Barolo Ravera comes from the vineyard of the same name, located in the most extreme part of the municipality of Monforte d’Alba, famous for its beautiful exposure to the sun and its great slope, so as to produce full-bodied and structured wines thanks to the soils rich in clay and limestone. 80-year-old plants of the rare michet clone, the wine ages for 24 months in large oak barrels and 2 years in the bottle, thus creating a complex Barolo, but which also plays on drinkability. A wine with an intense aroma and a great structure, with enormous potential over time.
In 2016, the wine shows an intense aroma and austere and energetic tannins, with a potential for structure and resistance of at least 30 years.
