Ettore Germano – Barolo Lazzarito Riserva – 2012

Considered on par with vineyards such as Gabutti and Parafada, Lazzarito Cru is known for the depth of its wines in terms of structure due to its soils and optimal exposure. Produced only in the Riserva version in very few quantities, very old vineyards of 90 years in good condition but with now low yields, perfectly exposed to the southwest on compact limestone soils. The grapes ferment in steel tanks in contact with the skins for 50-60 days, after malolactic fermentation there is a minimum 36-month aging in 2000-liter oak barrels followed by several years in the bottle. The result is a child of time, an egregious wine with hints of red fruit turning to licorice, it releases power but also elegance in the mouth, persistent tannins and remarkable structure. A real gem.

Description

Four generations have succeeded one another at the helm of the Ettore Germano winery over the decades, demonstrating an egregious ability to make wine. The winery has been located in Serralunga d’Alba, one of the communes of the Barolo appellation, since 1856 where the Germano family from being simple grape contributors became producers only beginning to bottle in 1975. In fact it was with Ettore Germano that they expanded production by buying new land, planting new native and allochthonous vines then starting a real business in 1988. They own 19 hectares between Serralunga and Cigliè in Alta Langa where they produce numerous labels such as Bollicine, Riesling and Barbera but it is Barolo that is the real focus mainly because of the hectares distributed in the best Cru of the commune such as Cerretta, Prapò, Lazzarito and Vignarionda. In the sense of great respect for the environment no chemicals are used but only natural ones, a lot of work in the vineyard so as to obtain healthy clusters, in the cellar a continuous research in techniques during vinification, aging in large barrels and the use of the screw cap to increase aromas and longevity in some wines. Today at the helm is son Sergio Germano along with his wife, who continue to pass on the true traditional values of a Langa family under a modern profile.
