Emidio Pepe – Montepulciano d’Abruzzo – 2020

Among Italian red wines with an international reputation, Montepulciano has proven dominant for its structure, propensity to age and incredible evolutionary nuances over the years. Sourced from very old vines with an average age of 30 years where climate and limestone-rich soils donate clusters with good concentration, the grapes are vinified spontaneously in vitrified cement tanks with daily punching down, then aged in the same tanks for no less than 12 months before resting in the bottle the time deemed necessary depending on the vintage. The spearhead of the winery, a true oenological symbol that presents fruity notes when young that evolve over the years into spicy notes, the drink is powerful and full-bodied where the acidity and tannin to the end possess strength and persistence.

Description

In the sign of the great figures of Italian viticulture, Emidio Pepe holds a place of distinct fame not only because of his iconic wines but also because of his dedication to his land: Abruzzo. The family winery is located in Torano Nuovo in the province of Teramo, the story begins in the founding year 1964 when Emidio, a young and tireless worker, decided to believe in the quality and aging potential of the local native grapes Trebbiano and Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. Very attached to traditions, he dedicated himself to caring for the terroir with biodynamic methods from the very beginning, on 17 hectares of vineyards located around the estate the vines are raised using the pergola method and the field grafting technique in which the rooted cuttings are planted by first letting the root system develop, then performing a mass selection of the best vines and finally grafting them on site. But it is in the winery that we take a leap back in time, hand-selected and hand-picked grapes with crushing in wooden tanks with the feet to obtain a rich must, for white wines spontaneous fermentation in vitrified cement tanks to preserve the identity of the vintage while in the reds spontaneous fermentation in wooden tanks with subsequent aging in barrels. The real secret is the very long bottle rests where the wine before bottling does not undergo filtrations so as to preserve the very essence of the grapes, they are released to the market only when deemed ready. Love and ingenuity have always guided the Pepe family making them now true stars.
