Egon Müller – Scharzhofberger Kabinett – 2019

Sharzhofberg is the most famous vineyard in the Mosel, located in the Saar sub zone it is completely south facing, despite being quite far from the river, thanks to deep soils rich in slate it is able to store the heat of the day and then release it slowly during the night, so that the vines benefit from a mild climate giving fine wines of great complexity. The Muller family cultivates about 7 hectares of vineyard in this parcel, where chemicals have been totally eliminated, but lends itself to the use of natural fertilizers, while the harvests are only late and carried out by hand so much so that they often have clusters affected by noble rot, giving the wines sweetness and longevity to the unprecedented.
This is a Kabinett here, meaning that according to the Pradikat classification, the wines are fresher with less residual sugar. After spontaneous alcoholic fermentation in steel tanks, the wine matures in large wooden barrels.
We are talking about one of the craziest whites in the world, where complexity and silk come together. Aromas of grapefruit, ginger, light notes of hydrocarbon and minerality, chalk, pulp with dry tannins are the characteristics of this wine. Eternal.

Description

Egon Muller’s wines can be ranked as the best Rieslings in the world, they enjoy the highest prestige, so much so that they are auctioned at priceless prices. The winery has a centuries-old history and is located in the forested Sharzberg area near the famous Grand Cru ” Sharzhofberg ” in Wiltingen in the Saar subzone in Mosel. This area with a strong vocation for viticulture of the Riesling grape variety was already cultivated in the 1300s by monks, only in Napoleonic times was the estate sold to the Muller family. As early as 1898, thanks to Egon Muller the wines were considered among the best with exuberant prices. Today the winery is run by Egon Muller IV, where they cultivate 16 hectares of vineyards with great care, so much so that they avoid chemicals; in addition, most of the plants are still free-range. The most interesting point of this winery, is the consistency in the production of wines with residual sugar, just as the German winemaking tradition predicts. From the Kabinett to the Trockenbeerenauslese, the wines are sublime, from another time but with unparalleled technique and craftsmanship.
