Castell’in Villa – Chianti Classico Riserva – 2010

Castell’in Villa is a small medieval village located at the southern end of the Chianti Classico appellation under the municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga, dates back to 1200 and is an area rich in history surrounded by a breathtaking landscape full of woods, olive groves and vineyards. Since 1967 the estate is owned by princess Coralia Ghertsos in Pignatelli della Leonessa, where she manages almost 300 hectares, of which 54 are vineyards and 32 are olive groves and the remaining is woodland. The style of the winery while keeping an eye on tradition, was one of the first ones to use barriques and steel tanks at controlled temperature. There are no compromises, it mainly produces Sangiovese grapes for Chianti Classico, except for Supertuscan where it is blended with Cabernet Sauvignon. Low yields, long maceration on skins accompanied by important ageing of even 4-5 years before the wines are sold. Wines without fashion or time, but with a power and persuasiveness without comparison. It is difficult not to be impressed by them.
Chianti Classico Riserva comes from the blend of the best vineyards, it is aged for 3 years in oak casks and two years in bottle. It presents itself as an ample wine, scents of violet, cherry, tobacco and leather, enveloping with a great timbre, persistent tannins. Wow.
