Cascina Fontana – Barolo dal Comune di Castiglione Falletto – 2017

Barolo from the commune of Castiglione Falletto, is the winery’s most distinctive wine. Only a few thousand bottles are produced in the best vintages, and it comes from the union of two beautiful vineyards all located in the village of Castiglione: “Villero,” famous precisely for giving austere wines but with great class and elegance, and “Mariondino” famous for giving slightly rounder wines. The aging and refinement for this Barolo, do not mind the time, the wine is put on the market only when it is ready, after about more than 4 years of rest in the cellar. For aging, the wine ages for 24 to 30 months in large barrels, 1 year in cement tanks and more than a year in the bottle. A Barolo that fully reflects its terroir and power. Perfumed, sensual, austere but with fine tannins, but with enormous potential for ‘aging. Great Wine!!!

Description

Cascina Fontana represents the true essence of the Barolo Langa. This is a typical winery, simple, but with ideas well grounded in tradition and values. The winery was founded in 1994, when winemaker Mario Fontana, after an experience as a farmer in the family business, decided to change his way and create his own small business with his own ideas of making wine, but especially Barolo. The winery is located in Perno, a small hamlet in the municipality of Monforte d’Alba, a little-known, niche area, but one that actually produces wines with body and structure, thanks to its privileged location and soils rich in blue marl.
Mario’s philosophy is very humble, as he says himself, he has simply followed his grandfather’s teachings, he has not changed anything about winemaking or ways of working in the vineyard. He manages only 5 hectares between the communes of Castiglione Falletto, La Morra and Sinio, where he produces the most typical wines of Langa: Dolcetto, Barbera, Nebbiolo and Barolo. In the winery, don’t imagine who knows what! There are only cement tanks, medium-large oak barrels for aging and steel tanks for spontaneous fermentation without temperature control. Even in the vineyard, Mario tries to work as cleanly as possible, without stressing the vines too much. The distinguishing characteristic of Cascina Fontana’s wines is their freshness and aromatic intensity..they are very pleasant wines to drink, not too hard, but thanks precisely to this large acidic part they are wines that have high potential over time.
