Cascina Fontana – Barbera d’Alba – 2018

Cascina Fontana represents the true essence of the Barolo Langa. This is a typical winery, simple, but with ideas well founded on tradition and values. The winery was founded in 1994, when the winemaker Mario Fontana, after an experience as a farmer in the family business, decided to change direction and create his small business with his ideas of making wine, but above all Barolo. The winery is located in Perno, a small fraction of the municipality of Monforte d’Alba, a little-known, niche area, but which actually produces full-bodied and structured wines, thanks to its privileged location and soils rich in blue marl.
Mario’s philosophy is very humble … as he himself says, he simply followed his grandfather’s teachings, he didn’t change anything about winemaking or the ways of working in the vineyard. It manages only 5 hectares between the municipalities of Castiglione Falletto, La Morra and Sinio, where it produces the most typical wines of the Langa: Dolcetto, Barbera, Nebbiolo and Barolo. In the cellar you do not imagine who knows what! There are only concrete tanks, medium-large oak barrels for aging and steel tanks for spontaneous fermentation without temperature control. Even in the vineyard, Mario tries to work as cleanly as possible, without stressing the plant too much. The characteristic that distinguishes the wines of Cascina Fontana is the freshness and aromatic intensity … they are very pleasant wines to drink, not too hard, but thanks to this large acid part they are wines that have a high potential over time.
Barbera comes from different vineyards between the municipality of Sinio, a cooler area, and Castiglione Falletto rich in white marl. The wine is aged in small used barrels and cement, but despite aging it is a crunchy Barbera with a nice acidity and slightly round.
