Virna – Barolo Brunate – 2022
The 2022 vintage has given us a new story: the first time two female winemakers have joined forces to create a true masterpiece, a unique and special Barolo born from the symbol of their friendship and collaboration. Virna and Raffaella Pittatore’s Brunate was produced in just over 1,000 bottles. It comes from a 2,000-square-meter micro-parcel of 70-year-old vines that has always been owned by Raffaella’s family in one of La Morra’s most historic Crus, previously leased. Thanks to Virna, the idea developed rapidly due to her experience and skill in creating a wine that represented both of them. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks for
15–18 days, during which a small portion of the must undergoes carbonic maceration; the wine is then aged in a 1,000-liter barrel for 24 months. The result is commendable for its finesse and expressiveness; the aromatic profile is extraordinary, ranging from intense red fruit to rose petals of exquisite elegance. On the palate, it makes a striking impression with its freshness and well-integrated acidity, where the tannins on the finish are refined and velvety. A wine unlike many others, making it a niche offering,
a wait that is worth more than any award.

Description
Virna Borgogno is a true winemaker! As the first woman to earn a degree in oenology in Italy in 1988, she decided to follow in her father Enrico’s footsteps and personally cultivate the vineyards and create wines—but above all, great Barolos. Hers is a historic winery located right in the famous town of Barolo, where she vinifies just 10 hectares across the municipalities of Barolo, Novello, and Monforte… but above all, she cultivates some of the best vineyard plots in the appellation, such as the renowned Cannubi, Sarmassa, and Preda.
Virna’s style fully embodies her strong character! She tends the vineyard like a precious gem, and in the cellar she strives to maintain a traditional style with a slightly modern touch. She likes to create wines that are true to their terroir, yet at the same time approachable and not too harsh!
