Passopisciaro – Contrada Guardiola Terre Siciliane – 2022
Prior to their classification, the grapes were simply blended to create the wine “Passorosso” without specifying a provenance, but it was only from 2008 that the individual Contrade were made pure. Produced for the first time in 2011, Contrada Guardiola (northern side) is the fruit of ancient flows located at an altitude between 800 and 1000 metres where the soils are rich and compact in a microclimate of unnatural freshness. Selected grapes from the oldest hundred-year-old vineyards are fermented in steel and then transferred to oak barrels where they continue their malolactic fermentation and refinement for 18 months. The synthesis of the work is a powerful and expressive wine, organoleptically rich in red berry aromas, assiduous freshness and minerality in a combination of profound complexity in continuous evolution.

Description
“Advantages and oddities, this is Etna, a virgin place governed by nameless forces” is how we could describe a true natural wine masterpiece as seen through the eyes of Andrea Franchetti. An illustrious and visionary oenologist, former owner of Tenuta di Trinoro in Tuscany, after a trip to Sicily, fascinated by its riches, he decided to restore an ancient baglio on the north side of the volcano. The estate was established above the village of PassoPisciaro in the municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia in the early 2000s, where he planted and restored ancient abandoned vineyards of Nerello Mascalese (some of which were a hundred years old) together with other allochthonous varieties such as Chardonnay, Petit Verdot and Cesanese d’affile.
Little known, Etna is characterised by altitude and climate, that is, low temperatures and Mediterranean influence, on its various slopes made up of fertile and drained soils, rich in minerals that give expressiveness to the grapes due to the excellent temperature ranges. He was the first to understand the historical subdivision of the volcano into natural micro-zones, introducing the declination of “Contrade”, that are plots located at different heights and sun exposures, formed by various layers of lava flows in which specific microclimates prevail. There are 28 hectares of property between 500 and 1,000 metres above sea level, spread over 5 districts (Rampante, Sciaranuova, Guardiola, Porcaria and Chiappemacine) immersed in an untamed and preserved nature from which wines are obtained that exalt their different specificities according to type. There is no current or style of vinification, nothing is predefined except for the course of the seasons where each wine is the result of quality sought in the selections and refinements through the use of naturist methods and ideas. Although still a mystery to oenologists, this territory soon won over true connoisseurs, making Franchetti a true beacon for Etna’s wine renaissance in the world.
