Château Mouton Rothschild – Pauillac Premier Grand Cru Classé – 2008

Mouton Rothschild is the estate’s first wine, made from only the finest and oldest vines from the vineyard classified Premier Grand Cru Classé. In 2008 the blend was 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Merlot. The wine is supreme and complex, with toasty, black currant and violet notes while in the mouth it has a deep persistence with silky but well-structured tannins. An indefatigable, indeed memorable wine.

Description

Château Mouton Rothschild represents history and prestige in Bordeaux.
The winery is located in Pauillac in the heart of the Medoc, one of the most important mentions for the Premier Grand Cru Classé classification where the soils are rich in stones with little clay, an area suitable only for the cultivation of vines due to low fertility. Speaking of the winery’s history, it has been connected since 1853 to the Rothschild family, thanks to the purchase of the current estate from Nathaniel de Rothschild, but only since 1924 with the entry of Philippe de Rothschild did destiny and fame change. The figure of Baron Philippe de Rothschild has been instrumental in the estate’s successes, beginning to vinify and bottle his own wine, building a majestic 100-meter special cooperage, collaborating with world-famous artists such as Picasso for the bottle label, where each vintage is represented by a different work. Speaking of technicalities, the winery has 80 hectares of vineyards classified since 1973 Premier Grand Cru Classé ( it had been unjustly deprived in the 1855 classification ) planted mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon, but there is no shortage of Merlot and Petit Verdot to enrich the wine by giving persuasiveness and smoothness; there is also a small part of Sauvignon Blanc and Gris, Semillon and Muscadelle for the production of the unique white ” Aile d’Argent “. In accordance with French tradition, the vines are densely planted at 10000 vines per hectare with an average age of 40 years. As far as winemaking is concerned, the winery has always had an eye on preserving a traditional style while always trying to focus on a modern avant-garde style; a clear example are oak vats of different capacities for each type of grape with gravity feeding, while the aging of the wines lends itself to the use of new barrels for at least 2 years. Production is related to the historic Chateau Mouton Rothschild wine with vines exclusively classified Premier Grand Cru Classé, instead with younger plants since 1993 the second wine of the house ” Petit Mouton Rothschild ” was born.
