Castello del Terriccio – Lupicaia Toscana IGT – 2013
Named after the sighting of wolves on the hill where the grapes come from, it was launched in 1993 and was an immediate success. Obtained from a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot, since 2010, the vines are south-facing on calcareous/sandy soils rich in minerals and organic substances, giving the wines fragrance and complexity. The vinification is done in stainless steel separately for each grape and then aged in Allier barriques and tonneaux for about 22 months, before resting in the bottle for a few months. The result is a wine with good aromaticity and structure accompanied by silky and pleasant tannins which, thanks to its complexity, has great ageing potential.

Description
With a history stretching back thousands of years, Castello del Terriccio and its agricultural and wine estates along the peninsula have been mentioned in documents since the 13th century. The recent history, however, began in 1975 when Gian Annibale Rosso di Medelana inherited from his uncles the property, divided into sharecroppers, passing to a direct management entirely dedicated to viticulture. Passionate about wine and horses, after an accident, he immersed himself deeply in the activity, beginning the study and understanding of the different terroirs within it. The estate is located in Castellina Marittima, in the province of Pisa, and extends from the Maremma to Bolgheri, where the combination of land, air and light makes it one of the most suitable territories for grapes. In addition to Sangiovese, it was decided in 1988 to plant international varieties including Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, perfect for these climates. With the entry of the current oenologist Carlo Ferrini, a greater meticulousness in production was imprinted, which together with modern techniques gave life between 1992/93 to their first historic Supertuscans such as Tassinaia and Lupicaia, projecting the winery towards global success. These are the legacies handed down to the present day, following a philosophy of research and interpretation of the grape varieties in a context of biodiversity and respect in which the balance between nature and man is not altered. The separate vinifications of each grape and the ageing in Allier barrels where Time is the key, give the wines a quality and concentration of great singularity. A noble prestige at the basis of the Tuscan oenological triumph in the world.
